PTI Seeks Extension for Intra-Party Polls Case, ECP Grants Request

Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) requested additional time from the Pakistan Election Commission (ECP) to submit a response in the intra-party polls case, as reported by lycaneye
Barrister Gohar, representing PTI, appeared before a five-member commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.

“At the outset of the hearing, I have to appear before IHC today in an important case, please grant me more time to submit a response,” Barrister Gohar pleaded with the ECP.
The Election Commission of Pakistan accepted the plea, and the hearing was adjourned until August 15.
PTI’s counsel has been directed to submit the party’s response during the next hearing.

It is worth noting that the last date for PTI to conduct intra-party polls was June 13, 2021. However, the party was granted an extension until June 13 of this year upon its request. The ECP emphasized that further delay is not possible, as a last notice was issued in June 2022.

Section 208 of the Elections Act requires all political parties to elect office-bearers at the federal, provincial, and local levels on a regular basis, in accordance with the respective political party’s Constitution. “Provided that a period of not more than five years shall intervene between any two elections.”, read a proviso to Section 208(1) of the act.

As per the law, a political party is also obligated to publish the updated list of its central office-bearers and executive committee members on its website and notify the Election Commission of any subsequent changes.
