Amazon’s Development of Inferentia and Trainium Chips for Generative AI

In an unassuming office building located in Austin, Texas, a dedicated team of Amazon’s employees are diligently working on the development of two distinct types of microchips known as Inferentia and Trainium. Amazon’s ultimate goal is to offer these chips to its Amazon’s Web Services (AWS) customers as an alternative solution to training large language models on Nvidia GPUs, which have become increasingly difficult to obtain.


Adam Selipsky, the CEO of AWS, highlighted in an interview that Amazon’s is well-equipped to meet the growing demand for generative AI chips. However, other prominent tech giants have been quick to seize opportunities in the generative AI sector. For instance, Microsoft gained attention by hosting OpenAI’s ChatGPT and making a substantial $13 billion investment in the company. Similarly, Google introduced its own large language model, Bard, and invested $300 million in a competitor of OpenAI called Anthropic.


While Amazon’s is known for pioneering markets rather than merely following trends, some analysts believe the company might be in a catch-up mode within this rapidly evolving field.


Despite the competition, Amazon’s strategic focus on custom silicon, exemplified by chips like Inferentia and Trainium, could potentially give it a competitive edge in the long run. These chips cater to various stages of machine learning, particularly the training and inference phases. AWS has been involved in the creation of custom silicon since 2013, and chips like Nitro have become integral components of its cloud infrastructure.
