Pakistan’s Search for Caretaker PM: Ishratul Ibad and Justice Shakeel Baloch Among Considered Names

As the government’s term approaches its end, the search for a caretaker prime minister has intensified in Pakistan. In a virtual meeting attended by key coalition partners and federal ministers, four crucial topics were discussed – the caretaker prime minister, Census 2023, dissolution of assemblies, and by-elections.

Notable figures under consideration for the caretaker prime minister position include former Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad and Justice Shakeel Baloch from Balochistan, among others. The meeting was attended by prominent figures such as PM Shehbaz Sharif, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PDM President Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and MQM-P’s leadership.

The decision to dissolve the assemblies on August 9, as proposed by PM Shehbaz Sharif, received unanimous approval from the participants. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of conducting general elections on schedule. The matter of Census 2023 was also addressed, and the allied parties expressed readiness to accept the decision of the Council of Common Interest (CCI) on this matter.

During the meeting, it was agreed that the caretaker government would handle all affairs related to the upcoming general elections. The participants emphasized that the nomination of the caretaker prime minister should be PM Shehbaz Sharif’s prerogative and suggested that he should consult with the opposition before making the appointment.

Various names were put forward for the role of caretaker prime minister, with the names of former Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad and Justice Shakeel Baloch from Balochistan gaining consideration. However, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) requested additional time for consultation on the nomination.

In light of the discussions and suggestions during the meeting, PM Shehbaz Sharif sought further input from the coalition allies before making the final decision on the caretaker prime minister.

The virtual meeting came shortly after PM Shehbaz Sharif hinted at the possibility of dissolving the National Assembly on August 9. He assured that the decision-making process for the caretaker prime minister would involve consultations with coalition parties and the opposition leader.

The selection of a caretaker prime minister is a crucial step in the democratic process of Pakistan, ensuring a smooth transition of power and conducting free and fair general elections. As the government nears the end of its term, all stakeholders are keenly focused on the selection process and are committed to upholding the democratic values of the nation.
