Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has urged caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar to take necessary measures to ensure timely general elections in the country. This appeal comes after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) failed to provide a definitive date for the upcoming elections, raising concerns about a potential delay.
The speculation about the delay in holding the general elections arose when the Director General (Law) Muhammad Arshad was unable to provide a specific date for the polls during a hearing on petitions against delimitations of provincial constituencies PS 7, 8, and 9 Shikarpur. Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial inquired about the timing of the general elections, to which the director general did not provide a clear response.
Qureshi’s letter to the interim prime minister highlighted that the PTI intends to challenge the decision made by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in court. The CCI, on August 5, “unanimously” approved the results of the 7th Population and Housing Census. This decision has led to speculations that the general elections, originally scheduled for November after the dissolution of the National Assembly on August 9, may not take place in the current year.
In his letter, Qureshi emphasized the importance of upholding the country’s law and constitution, suggesting that it is time to steer the nation on the path of legal adherence and democratic principles.
Furthermore, the PTI leader extended his party’s cooperation to caretaker Prime Minister Kakar, acknowledging the significant responsibility that comes with his role. He commended Kakar’s appointment and expressed the PTI’s willingness to work together to fulfill the responsibilities of the caretaker government.
Qureshi also criticized the previous government’s conduct, stating that the country’s constitutional foundations have suffered significant damage due to their actions. He accused the former government of using state institutions to evade accountability and attempting to sideline the PTI from the electoral process. Qureshi highlighted the alleged mistreatment of PTI chairman Imran Khan, claiming that he was subjected to inhumane conditions while in Attock prison and denied basic rights promised by the Constitution and jail laws.
The PTI leader highlighted the plight of over 10,000 PTI workers currently incarcerated and stressed the importance of a level playing field for all political parties and candidates in the upcoming general elections. He emphasized that providing equal opportunities and a fair environment for all stakeholders is crucial for the credibility of the electoral process.
Qureshi’s sentiments reflect the significance of maintaining democratic principles and ensuring the transparency and fairness of elections. As Pakistan moves forward with its political process, the call for timely and credible elections resonates as an essential aspect of upholding citizens’ rights to vote and participate in shaping the nation’s future.
The uncertainty surrounding the timing of the general elections underscores the need for effective coordination among all relevant authorities to ensure a smooth electoral process that upholds democratic values and principles. As the nation navigates through these challenges, the cooperation between political parties, government bodies, and the Election Commission will play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
