Canada’s shocking allegations linking Indian government agents to the assassination of prominent Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar have triggered an international outcry, with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari dubbing India a “rogue and terrorist state.” The revelations have put India in the spotlight for violating the sovereignty of a NATO member state, Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statements before the parliament have raised significant concerns. He disclosed that Canadian security agencies are actively investigating credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Indian government and Nijjar’s killing. Trudeau described the matter as “extremely serious.”
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, a former foreign minister, condemned India’s alleged involvement in “terrorist acts” and urged the international community to acknowledge India’s actions. He emphasized that this was not the first time India had been accused of conducting terrorism, citing previous instances where Indian spies were found involved in terrorist activities in Pakistan.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also stressed the violation of international law and norms, as well as Canadian sovereignty. He called upon Pakistan to rally international support for Canada and draw attention to the actions of what he referred to as a “religio-fascist state.”
The international community has expressed deep questions over Canada’s allegations. The White House’s National Security Council spokesperson emphasized the need for Canada’s investigation to proceed and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
The UK government stated that it is closely coordinating with Canadian authorities regarding the serious allegations but refrained from further comments during the ongoing investigation.
Australia also voiced “deep concern” about the developments and noted ongoing investigations. The country conveyed its concerns to India at senior levels.
The allegations made by Canada have thrust India into the global spotlight, with calls for transparency, accountability, and respect for international norms and laws. The outcome of Canada’s investigation and the international response to these allegations will likely have far-reaching implications for India’s diplomatic relations and its standing on the global stage.
