Senator Anwar ul Haq Kakar, recently chosen as Pakistan’s new caretaker prime minister, is a prominent figure in Balochistan’s political landscape. Elected to the Senate in 2018, Kakar has been an active participant in the province’s political affairs. Prior to his senatorial term, he served as the spokesperson for the provincial government. Kakar, affiliated with the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), belongs to the Kakar tribe and has a mixed Pashtun and Baloch heritage. This background allows him to represent both Pashtuns and Balochs in the region. He maintains strong connections with mainstream political parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
As the eighth interim head of government, Kakar’s selection followed consultations between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition Raja Riaz. The decision was subsequently submitted for approval to President Arif Alvi.
Regarded as an intellectual, Kakar has cultivated relationships with various political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during its tenure. He played a role in advising former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Balochistan-related matters. However, his party, BAP, has faced criticism due to its shifting affiliations.
Born in 1971 in Muslim Bagh, located in Balochistan’s Killa Saifullah district, Anwar ul Haq Kakar completed his education within the province. He holds Master’s in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Balochistan. Before entering politics, he began his career as a schoolteacher in his hometown.
As a founding member of BAP, Anwar ul Haq Kakar has actively participated in the party’s activities and served as its central spokesperson in 2018. Additionally, he holds the position of Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis.
Senator Kakar’s appointment as caretaker prime minister is significant in ensuring stability during the transition of power. His role aims to ensure the continuity of essential policies and projects initiated by the outgoing government.
